Sea Level CCI - Phase 1 completed, Phase 2 begins

It's an incredibly exciting time for the Sea Level CCI project team. The first 3 years (2011 - 2013) of the project activities are now complete and a new chapter is underway taking the team into the next 3 year phase.

Some of the highlights of the first 3 years (Phase 1) include:

  • Definition of the users requirements for climate applications.
  • New algorithms have been developed in order to improve the altimeter measurements for climate applications (orbit solutions, geophysical corrections, instrumental corrections,...).
  • A formal validation protocol has been developed in order to estimate and validate the performances.
  • An international selection meeting has allowed the selection of the best algorithms.
  • More than 50 years of cumulated altimeter data have been processed, requiring an homogenised approach between altimeter missions.
  • Production of an 18 year-long time series (1993-2010) of sea level maps with associated climate indicators: global and regional mean sea level trends.
  • Assessment of the products by climate modelling groups.

 Looking forward to the next 3 years (Phase 2), the team will be focusing on: 

  • Refining the user requirements at climate scales.
  • Reducing the errors at some spatial and temporal scales.
  • Increasing the length of the time series and reducing the gap with present days with extensions and a full reprocessing of the dataset.
  • Improving the spatial coverage and reducing errors in coastal areas and in the Arctic region.
  • Integrating new altimeter missions.
  • Providing a sustainable system of production
